Czech President Vaclav Klaus has signed the Lisbon Treaty, the final step to complete the ratification process of a charter designed to transform Europe into a more unified and powerful global player, the BBC reported.
Klaus signed the treaty just hours after Czech Constitutional Court ruled that the document, which already has been ratified by all other EU nations, does not violate the country's constitution, the Washington Post reported.
I respect the court decision, even though he does not agree with it, Klaus said.
The Czech Republic was the only EU country not to have approved the treaty, which was drawn up to streamline decision-making in the EU, the BBC reported.
Klaus accused the court of bias and said the Czech Republic was no longer sovereign, A BBC correspondent said.
EU leaders agreed last week to Klaus' last-minute demand - an opt-out from the treaty's Charter of Fundamental Rights, the Post reported.
