Illinois Democrat Roland Burris was sworn in by Vice President Dick Cheney Thursday. The Capitol Hill ceremony officially made Burris the junior senator from Illinois.
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich appointed Burris to the senate. Illinois state lawmakers have since impeached Blagojevich who is facing charges related to the accusation that he tried to sell President elect Barack Obama's senate seat that now belongs to Burris.
Originally senate democrats had refused to seat Burris, but on Thursday they welcomed him into the Senate applauding at Burris' swearing in ceremony.
Burris, the former attorney general of Illinois, is the only black member of the US Senate. He will serve the remaining two years of Obama's six year term at which time if he wants to remain in the senate he will have to run for re-election.
On Friday Democrat Ted Kaufman will be sworn in as a senator to replace Vice President elect Joseph Biden of Delaware.
