Lesbian Rape

One good thing has come out of the Sandra Cantu case: Lesbian rape can be taken seriously now.

That’s probably the reason this story has become national news. It’s not your typical rape and/or murder case. This time it’s a woman who raped a girl.

It’s something out of the ordinary. Just like with Laci Peterson. God knows how many men have murdered their wives. It was because Laci was pregnant with her son that made this story more heartbreaking, and thus headlined across the nation. (To this day, Scott Peterson still claims he is not guilty while rotting away on Death Row).

This time, it’s lesbian rape, that has us surprised.

Discovered in a suitcase floating in an irrigation pond in Tracy, Calif., the body 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, said to have been raped with a foreign object. While the autopsy results are currently sealed, Melissa Huckaby, the 28-year-old Sunday school teacher charged for the rape and homicide, has not made a plea. She is due back in court on May 22.

A female raping a female? Not something, many people could accept as true. It’s similar to when most of us had a double take upon hearing of the Massachusetts priest who raped an eight-year-old boy. In our minds, these things just don’t happen.

Yet, gay rape between males is easier to understand. On the other hand, “How could a vagina rape another vagina?” That’s the common thought when it comes to women assaulting women.

From She Stole My Voice: A Documentary about Lesbian Rape, consider this “Society views male sexual organs as penetrating, destructive and female sexual organs as receptive and nourishing, respectively. With the right context, female sexual organs can be just as destructive, or even more destructive, than male sexual organs,” said Justine Chang and Armand Kaye, directors of the documentary.

I don’t know in what framework female sex organs are technically more destructive than male organs, when it comes to assault on other females. Nevertheless, the point is that lesbian rape is real. It is not a sex fantasy for porn watchers to enjoy. It happens, and it traumatizes just as much as male perpetrators.

Yet, I can understand how this reality can be hard to swallow. Although many of us hate to admit it, we still live in a male-dominated society. We haven’t had a female president yet. There are still men who earn more than women for doing the same work—even though it’s been more than 40 years since the Equal Pay Act has taken effect. In addition, yes, most rapists are men.

But people are people. You’re a person whether you are a guy, girl, or hermaphrodite. If one sex rapes, so can the other. There’s practically nothing humans aren’t capable of. 106 years ago, we couldn’t fly. Now it’s practically a crime-like routine. Just look at our carbon footprint—that’s all the evidence needed.

Thus, is the Sandra Cantu case bizarre? Not really. Is it bad? Of course it is. Can there possibly be any good? If you look at the silver lining, yes. Finally, America is opening its eyes to the threat of lesbian rape.

Rape is rape and I am glad this was recognised, being forced to have sex is disgraceful.

I never heard of a lesbian rape, although I have heard alot of gay rape. This is really sad and bizarre. I can't believe that children are mostly the victims of rape too.

While the story appears to be unusual, it's an isolated event. That being said, I do not appreciate the alarmist, homophobic tone which this Op-Ed addresses the subject matter with. Even the title, "Lesbian Rape," implies that lesbians are sexual deviants akin to rapists.

Yes, rape happens, regardless of sexual orientation. However, rape is rape, regardless of the instigator's background.

Just because Ms. Huckaby sexually-assualted Ms. Cantu, why does the author jump to the assumption that Ms. Huckaby must therefore be a lesbian? If a bisexual male rapes a woman, is he suddenly a heterosexual? No.

This time it’s a woman who raped a girl.

But it's this libelous statement that's the worst aspect of this Op-Ed. Although she's charged with the rape and murder of Ms. Cantu, the suspect isn't a CONVICTED rapist. So, this negligent remark could be the subject of a libel lawsuit against ToTheCenter because Ms. Huckaby is innocent until found guilty.

I am embarrassed by this patently offensive, and poorly-conveyed opinion, that encourages fear where there should be truth. This isn't "citizen journalism," it's hate-mongering.

For shame, Lechristine9.

In response to JGentile106's comment, I want to make it clear that I had no intention of implying that lesbians are "sexual deviants akin to rapists," as JGentile felt I had suggested. I wrote this piece with NO homophobic attitude whatsoever--I am NOT a homophobe at all. But I apologize if the piece implied such a tone.

Second, I realize now that I practically stated Ms. Huckaby is a lesbian, based on the rape charges against her. What I meant to voice is merely a female raping another female--regardless of either one's sexual orientation. I termed it as lesbian rape simply because I wanted to bring the issue of lesbian rape itself into the light. So I used the Cantu case because it is the closest to a specific example, and also because it's a current event. I should've said that it's not a case of lesbian rape, per se. Sorry for my lack of political correctness--I know Ms. Huckaby is innocent until proven guilty.

I agree - rape is rape. It doesn't matter who does it and what the gender is.

in repsonse to LE CHRISTINE9...
This is not a case of lesbian rape..this is pedophilia...
a man raping a girl child is not described as a straight or heterosexual rape. it's pedophilia;

your choice of words "lesbian rape" is greatly offensive, very damaging and discriminatory; I am in total agreement with JGentile's every point!!! but glad u apologized.

kikos, you neglected to note that Lechristine9 also mentioned that her use of the term "lesbian rape" was specifically to highlight that KIND of act, and that she used the Cantu case as the closest example of recent news. I think that while her article was a bit clumsy at making this clear, she doesn't deserve the epithet of discriminatory, much less offensive.

You seem to have missed the point - that lesbians can be raped by other lesbians, and that this is as bad a criminal act as male on female rape can be.

As a 'normal' heterosexual male I find it inconcievable that a woman being raped by a woman is as bad as a woman being raped by a man. The violation of a woman by a man must certainly be more violent, invasive and threatening, no? The Cantu case appears to be more about a mentally ill woman moreso than the pedophilia perversion and I would not be surprised if it turns out the penetration was performed by the man friend they have as a person of interest. Regardless of this discussion I personally feel that ANY rape regardless of victim should be punishable with all the severity the system will allow. Any of these perps regardless of sex, orientation or age should serve a MINIMUM 10 years in the PENITENTIARY even under the most non-violent of crimes
