China has given 16 airlines permission to run regular directcommercial flights to Taiwan, reports The Washington Post. The flights will operate over 32 routes in the culmination of a plan that was announced in April.
China has long been at odds with Taiwan, which it still considers itself to have a right to sovereignty over.
Relations were strained again earlier this week when it was announced that the Dalai Lama planned to make a visit to the island, although China appears to be avoiding any overt criticism towards several of Taiwan's political parties. China considers the Dalai Lama to be a “dangerous separatist,” and frequently resorts to boycotts or similar acts of political outrage towards countries that harbor him.
Flights had been operating between the two nations since 2005, but they were all classified as charter flights.
