Although it had been all but certain that Hatoyama would take office since the Democratic Party of Japan's landslide victory at the last election, Hatoyama was officially confirmed for the office as of today, the Times Online reported.
Hatoyama, now notorious worldwide for his wife's many eccentricities – she claims to have been abducted by Venusians, among other things – in addition to his strong rhetoric that opposes the United States, is among the first Japanese leaders to have ever defeated the Liberal Democrats in a formal election.
Hatoyama became eligible for the office after his chief rival in the DPJ, Ozawa Ichiro, was forced to resign from his leading role following a corruption scandal four months before the election.
Hatoyama primarily espouses rhetoric on the leftist end of the political spectrum for his policy, blaming "American-style capitalism" for the economic crisis in a recent editorial that was published worldwide at the end of August.
