Golf and seven-a-side rugby return to the Olympic program for 2016 after earning the International Olympic Committee’s approval Friday in Copenhagen.
“Time will show that your decision was very wise,” Jacques Rogge, IOC president, told the Boston Globe.
The IOC executive board recommended the sports for inclusion ahead of baseball, softball, squash, karate, and roller sports, the Globe reported.
According to the Globe, golf and rugby, which were male-only sports when they were last on the program in 1904 and 1924 respectively, will be coed this time.
“I can dream about doing something that neither Tiger [Woods] nor Ernie [Els] have ever done,” Michelle Wie told the members, the Globe reported. “And that is to make the final putt to win an Olympic gold medal.”
"I think it's great for golf," Woods said from the Presidents Cup in San Francisco, the AP reported. "It's a perfect fit for the Olympics, and I think we are all looking forward to golf getting into the Olympics."
"We were ecstatic and wanted to jump on the table, but we sort of restrained ourselves," former New Zealand rugby great Jonah Lomu told The Associated Press. "It was just fantastic for the game."
