USS New York Unveiled in Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum Ceremony

The USS New York was displayed for the first time earlier today in a touching ceremony that was held at New York’s Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. The New York Daily News is reporting that prominent political figures such as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York Governor David Paterson and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended the ceremony.
There were approximately 6,000 spectators in attendance at the event. According to The New York Daily News, the USS New York will be headed to its home port at Virginia’s Norfolk Naval Station on Thursday. The Navy’s newest warship cost $1 billion to build and it contains 7.5 tons of the World Trade Center’s steel in its bow stem.
The Louisiana-based Northrop Grumman Corporation constructed the USS New York and Mike Petters, the Corporation’s President, elaborated on his thoughts about the importance of the finished product by saying, “We needed this ship, New York needed this ship, America needed this ship.”
Commander Curt Jones gave his thoughts about the USS New York during today’s ceremony that explained his perspective on its creation, stating, “There is a lot of emotion that is associated with this ship for all of us. The steel that is in the bow of this ship, that motivates us literally every day in what we do.”
