President Barack Obama gave a heartfelt speech earlier today in Fort Hood, Texas to the thousands who were in attendance at the Fort Hood Memorial. The service was held to mourn the losses of the 13 people who were killed last Thursday by alleged Fort Hood gunman and former Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan. CNN.com is reporting that President Obama described the acts that were committed as “incomprehensible slayings.”
Tuesday’s Fort Hood Memorial was open to the public and it was attended by President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, other prominent political figures, soldiers and families of the 13 people who were killed in the attack. CNN.com is projecting that the size of the crowd included an estimated 15,000 spectators who arrived to commemorate the lives of those who were tragically and senselessly murdered.
During his touching speech to the crowd in attendance at the Fort Hood Memorial, President Obama said, "This is a time of war. And yet these Americans did not die on a foreign field of battle. They were killed here, on American soil, in the heart of this great American community. It is this fact that makes the tragedy even more painful and even more incomprehensible."
President Obama addressed the families of the 12 soldiers and one civilian who were killed by the Fort Hood gunman and told them that their loved ones would “live on through the life of our nation.”
