In an opening that will undoubtedly stir up a tremendous amount of controversy, The Cannabis Café officially became open for business on Friday in Portland, Oregon. The Cannabis Café is the first venue in the history of the United States that will provide certified users of medicinal marijuana with a venue where they can get a hold of and smoke the drug, according to Reuters.com.
Madeline Martinez, the Executive Director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, gave a statement about the opening of The Cannabis Café, stating, “This club represents personal freedom, finally, for our members. Our plans go beyond serving food and marijuana. We hope to have classes, seminars, even a Cannabis Community College, based here to help people learn about growing and other uses for cannabis.”
According to Reuters.com, The Cannabis Café is formally classified as a private club since it is exclusively open to residents of Oregon who are not only members of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws but are also holders of a certified medical marijuana card. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, which is abbreviated as NORML, is a non-profit organization that works to reform marijuana laws.
The Cannabis Café is open for business between the hours of 10 A.M. and 10 P.M. and despite the fact that it has yet to acquire a liquor license the café conveniently serves food, which is sure to appeal to medicinal marijuana users.
