President Barack Obama signed a childhood obesity memorandum on Tuesday in front of First Lady Michelle Obama and several members of the Cabinet. CNN.com is reporting that the memorandum has been signed in order to implement a federal task force, which will have the assignment of developing a 90 day plan to encourage ideal coordination between private sectors, non-private sectors and the federal government.
The federal task force will help to correlate with the public relations efforts that have been made by First Lady Michelle Obama to raise awareness about the childhood obesity issue. The memorandum placed a strong emphasis on the involvement of communities and families, which will be called upon to utilize effective strategies to solve the problem of childhood obesity.
President Obama addressed childhood obesity earlier this morning at the White House, saying, “Childhood obesity is one of the most urgent health issues that we face in this country. We think that this [memorandum] has enormous promise in improving the health of our children, in giving support to parents to make the kinds of healthy choices that oftentimes are very difficult."
Statistics that were included in Tuesday’s memorandum indicate that nearly one-third of our nation’s children are either overweight or classified as obese.
