Oscar-winning director and actor Sydney Pollack died Monday afternoon in his Pacific Palisades home.
The 73-year-old filmmaker had been battling cancer for the last nine months. He spent his last hours with family and friends.
Unlike many of his colleagues, Pollack entered the film industry through the world of television, directing such high-profile shows as The Fugitive and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. By the mid-eighties, he had established himself as a powerful force in Tinseltown.
Pollack was nominated for his first Academy Award for directing the 1970 film, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, which focused on the lives of dancers during the Great Depression. He was nominated again in 1982 for his popular cross-dresser comedy, Tootsie. Pollack finally won his Oscar in 1985 for his love epic, Out of Africa, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. The film also won Best Picture.
Pollack was also responsible for other notable hits, such as The Way We Were, The Firm, and Absence of Malice. He also played supporting roles in The Player, Husbands & Wives, and Eyes Wide Shut.
Pollack’s last film appearance was the critically-acclaimed Michael Clayton, where he shared the screen with George Clooney.
"Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better. A tip of the hat to a class act," Clooney said. "He'll be missed terribly."
Aw, I just saw Pollack's picture on the front page of the newspaper. tear. He looks like what I would have wanted my grandfather to look like, if I had ever known him.
