Nurses in New York State will no longer be forced to work over-time, according to a New York State Nurses Association press release. The legislation forbids employers from requiring nurses to work overtime.
Newsday reported that this legislation applies only to nurses working in hospitals and nursing homes, but not to those in homecare.
New York Governor David A. Patterson, who approved the legislation, said the move addresses nurse shortage because it will encourage many nurses to return to their profession, reported Newsday. Thirty percent of registered nurses are not working in their profession, many because of the mandatory overtime.
According to the press release, Tina Gerardi, RN, chief executive officer of the Nurses Association said the association has been working towards this legislation for eight years.
"Our members across the state have told us that employer-mandated overtime is endangering their patients and their own health,” she said. “We are committed to ensuring that nurses are not forced to work beyond where they can provide safe patient care."
