A group of wounded veterans from Walter Reed Army Medical Center outside of Washington spent three days touring New York to get away from the routine hospital life they have come to know, reported the New York Times.
The all inclusive trip was organized by Hospital Audiences, sponsored by local business.
“It says that people can be antiwar and still really want to help the veterans,” said Leslie Winter, a member of the board of Hospital Audiences.
The veterans were able to tour the city, watch the Phantom of the Opera live, speak with the crew and enjoy numerous other activities designed to up lift their spirits.
The veterans said that the trip was a chance to escape and an opportunity to move on with their life.
“It feels good to be here,” said Corporal Nate Schaming, a member of the trip. “It’s nice that people care. At least it’s not like Vietnam and people don’t just spit on us.”
