Beard Disses Phelps Harshly in Response to Romance Rumors

On a recent broadcast of the John Jay and Rich Radio Show, former Olympic gold medal swimmer Amanda Beard was asked if she has ever been romantically linked to the most talked about man in the world and winner of eight gold medals in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, American swimmer Michael Phelps.
Much to the surprise of the show’s listeners, Beard not only strongly denied having had any romantic encounters with Phelps but also managed to diss him in the process.
Upon further interrogation after she stated that the two had never kissed or held hands, Beard responded by saying, “Come on, come on, come on! I have really good taste!”
Her conceited attitude has been met with widespread criticism amongst many in the media who have raced to the defense of the record-breaking Phelps, particularly on CNN’s Showbiz Tonight.
In an interview with People Magazine, Beard later claimed that she was merely joking around and that she viewed Phelps like a brother.
The show-stealer of the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps, has made no secret of how much he was picked on as a child and how he has overcome hurtful remarks from his past to become the most decorated Olympian in history.
You know this is another example of America's propensity to turn everything from politics to sports into and Entertainment Tonight style gossip session and sexual baloney innuendo. Who the hell cares if the President masterbates or the sports hero has romantic flings. So what? It increasingly confirms the concept of a prurient America who, like ancient Rome, is so fascinated with debauchery and consumption they barely notice the barbarians gathering at their gates.
Is this true? Do/did they actually have a relationship or period of prolonged contact? If so, then I'd have to hear the tone to know how it would strike me. I didn't see it. I can believe that she could be telling the simple truth. Impossible to guess without hearing it and/or knowing their history.
Do/did they actually have a relationship or period of prolonged contact?
Why should we care? Why does it matter? It's enough that we waste billions on the spectacle of sport and care so much about games let alone concern ourselves with the low gossip of who's boffing who.
I can see how they might view each other as brother and sister, as I've heard that the American swimmers are usually quite genial with each other. On the other hand, Beard could've just said something she didn't really mean, but wanted speculation ended. Eh it just seems like a stupid statement that doesn't deserve further analysis.
