This year, the Lasker Medical prizes went to Akira Endo of Japan, David C. Baulcombe of England and three American scientists, Gary B. Ruvkun, Stanley Falkow and Victor R. Ambros.
According to the New York Times, Akira Endo discovered the first cholesterol-lowering statin drug that helped millions of lives. Victor R. Ambros, David C. Baulcombe and Gary B. Ruvkun got awarded for their pioneering work in micro-RNAs. Stanley Falkow was awarded the Lasker prize for discovering and expanding the range of disease-causing microbes.
All five scientists made amazing research discoveries that set the groundwork for future research and brought major changes to people's lives. The scientists will receive their Lasker Prizes on Sept. 26, along with a $300,000 prize that goes to each category.
