Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said, Tuesday, that a bonfire built by college students caused the Tea Fire.
According to the AP, an anonymous tipster told police that ten students built a bonfire near an abandoned home in Montecito, Calif. The students stayed by the bonfire until between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. last Thursday morning. By Thursday evening the bonfire, which the students believed they had put out before leaving, turned into the wildfire that destroyed 210 homes in Santa Barbara.
Twenty-five people were injured in what is one of Santa Barbara County’s most destructive fires.
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Brown told a news conference the students aged 18 to 22 lived locally and attend the same school and that the fire is still under investigation. Brown refused to identify the students or the school they attended.
Once the investigation is completed, the district attorney's office will have to decide what, if any, criminal charges will be filed against the students.
