Despite a special court’s Thursday decision against them, child advocates that argue a link between vaccinations and autism are not giving the verdict a shot. The three-member panel of “special masters” sided with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccinations or those laced with thimerosal - a mercury-based additive - do not trigger autism.
"As the scientific community has been saying for a long time, there is no . . . credible, reproducible research that supports the hypothesis that MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine causes autism," Dr. Max Wiznitzer, an autism expert at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, told a CNN reporter.
Thousands of families were represented by the lawsuit, aided by attorney Tom Powers, which dealt with three different camps of the vaccination debate. One group argues that both types of vaccinations lead to autism, whereas the two other groups cite either thimerosal or MMR vaccinations as the primary culprit.
"If you have a vaccine injury, you're forced to sue Health and Human Services instead of suing the manufacturers. It's the government that oversees these court cases," President Wendy Fournier of the National Autism Association told CNN.com. "The conflict of interest is so huge in so many levels by having the government responsible for not only promoting,” but also regulating the safety of vaccination programs.
Thursday’s decision made a marked departure from a similar case two years ago that contended the symptoms of a Georgia girl’s autism were “significantly aggravated” by the vaccinations she received as a toddler, according to the Division of Vaccine Injury Compensation.
