I agree the U.S. isn't good at sharing...but then, if we're the country that has spent all the time/money/etc getting to the moon, who's to say that we can't be the country to reap its benefits? If it suddenly became plausible to profit off something in space, I think the U.S. is entitled not to share. I don't know whether that's ethically or morally correct, but I think legally we should have the right to hoard if we want. A lot of people would argue that the moon and everything else in space should be shared, as the current treaty says. But, like I said in the article...we'll see how people feel when we find something valuable out there.
I appreciated your take on violence in sports. It is easy to understand, though, why taking a young man and convincing him he's superman and roiding him up and telling him to knock the shit out of other guys on the field would lead to violent behavior. As for watching the bad program, think about it this way: you think those reporters really enjoy watching exocutions? No, but they're dedicated to their craft...they couldn't tell the story if they weren't there. My craft is being an amatuer current events blogger, and I'm willing to make all the sacrifices that come with that. I didn't know all the details about Martha, appreciate the info. It was amazing how people couldn't accept that should would break a law, period...a women can't get away with being two-faced. Touche on the race thing. That's a whole different argument, but the laws that just happen to prosecute certain types of crime much more severly than others are a huge fault in our judicial system.
I'm amazed that there's been an open and pretty thought-provoking discussion about abortion here without any screaming or crying and only a few baiting comments thrown in for flavor. Shame it's only been the few of us.
rwahrens - Good points...lovely comment :) I think one notable difference is that all the other issues involved a person doing something and society, or the government, or whoever, telling them not to do it. The concept that there is a third party involved - the unborn child, or the fetus, or whatever people want to call it - is maybe what sets the abortion argument above the rest in terms of complexity and intensity. In America especially, since we *theoretically* are a live-and-let-live society, for those who think the unborn is a living being, scientifically or religiously or whatever, it would seem abhorrent that that entity wouldn't have a say in the matter. Just the same, for those who don't think of the unborn that way, it would seem just as awful to infringe on the personal rights of a pregnant woman. Whatever it is, abortion seems to be THE topic that nobody budges on...that's the real reason to focus on prevention, because the discussion end of things hasn't accomplished much. As far as social norms, should "right" or "wrong" be relative to current ideas? Sometimes it seems not - we accept that racial or sexual predjudice is wrong, no matter what the majority in a given society think. But sometimes is seems so - think about the FCC fining broadcasters...maybe a society should have the right to decide what is acceptable and not in its public sphere.
See that's just what I'm talking about, the fallacies of both arguments. You point out Biblical contradictions, which shows why that argument sucks, and you also justify abortion with economic reasons. Having to justify it means that there is inherently something wrong with it. Either you shouldn't have to justify it, or you should be able to justify any crimes people commit. I'm not preaching here, just saying that's why the argument doesn't get anywhere...both sides are seriously flawed, but both are repeated ad nauseum.
I don't know about that...people definitely still care about "hard news." I think the real problem is that the 24 hour news-cycle means any story gets old really quickly, so the time between real breaking news has to be filled with fluff. If having to watch legit news sources report on ridiculousness is the cost of having unprecedented around-the-clock access to the world, then I guess maybe it's a small price to pay.
Good points. I guess I don't mean to say that the story wasn't newsworthy, or that the networks made any major mistakes. I suppose this article could be summed up in one sentence: shouldn't we all feel a little silly after spending so much time, money, and attention covering and watching the story?
wow. you guys really feel strongly about taco bell. do i dare ask valcano vs. black jack? i don't want bloodshed.
Regardless, when it comes to the ACLU, I think a lot of people see them like PETA - you can't argue with their ultimate goal, but it seems like they're constantly blowing things out of proportion and causing a stir where it doesn't need to be caused. As a white Christian male, I certainly am frustrated by a lot of the ACLU's stances, which seem over the top, as described by Schroe6. But, I think the good has outweighed the bad historically. For example, ACLU fought for integration, and anybody who believes in the correctness of the Constitution has to admit that God really doesn't belong in public schools, pledges, state mottos, etc. However, I can't argue that the ACLU is often unnecessarily abrasive and comes off as extremely publicity-hungry at time.
I'm beginning to think we're getting punk'd here. Schroe6 - jordanschroeder - related? And showerjuggernaut...I don't think we really want to hear the connotations of that name.
Schroe6, a little incindiary, but at least you're saying something. In terms I think you'd appreciate, I have to say that Home Depot firing that guy is just about as American as it gets. HD isn't a government entity, and as long as they don't base their hiring/firing on race, age, gender, etc etc, they can do whatever the hell they want. I think if you owned your own business, and one of your employees wore a button you weren't fond of, you'd be pissed if Uncle Sam told you you couldn't fire that person. In the mall the other day, I saw a girl wearing a shirt that said "I DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD." Now, if the desk clerk at Schroe6's Kiddie Care refused to come into work wearing anything but that shirt, wouldn't you want to toss that girl?
